National Asphalte does asphalt paving for your driveway in Laval, on the North Shore and in Montreal. We build it starting below the surface. First, we excavate the soil. Next, we put down a crushed stone base and we compact it. The asphalt comes last. We also pave for businesses and municipalities.

Why we excavate before paving

Topsoil and soft ground hold water like a sponge. In winter, that water freezes and lifts the asphalt on top. When it thaws, the ground settles back, and the asphalt cracks where it moved. A driveway laid on this ground goes through the same cycle every winter, and its cracks get wider.

That’s why National Asphalte removes the topsoil and the soft ground before paving. The excavator digs down to firm ground, which we then level to receive the stone base.

A compacted stone base under the asphalt

The stone base is what carries the weight of your cars, day after day. We spread crushed stone in the excavation, then compact it until it no longer moves. The stone lets water drain away, and the base stays firm from one season to the next. We also give it the slope that carries water away from your house.

Asphalt laid hot, then compacted

The asphalt arrives hot at the job site. We spread it over the base, and the roller compacts it before it cools. A tightly packed surface lets in less water and holds up better through the winters. We then finish the edges cleanly, along the yard and the street.

A curb to hold the sides

The edge of an asphalt driveway is its most exposed part. A curb holds it in place and draws a clean line between the driveway and the lawn. National Asphalte also installs the curbs around your driveway.

From home driveways to parking lots

  • At home. We pave the driveway where you park your cars, from the street to your door.
  • For a business. We pave the parking lot your customers see first when they arrive.
  • For industry. We pave the yards and access roads where heavy trucks drive.
  • For a municipality. We also do municipal work.

Has your driveway already cracked?

A cracked driveway does not always need to be redone completely. We first look at what made it fail, then tell you whether a repair or resurfacing is enough.

Asphalt or interlocking pavers?

National Asphalte installs both, on the same excavation and the same compacted stone base. We help you choose based on your property and your budget.

Common questions

Do you need to remove the old asphalt before repaving?

It depends on the stone base. If it has stayed firm, a new layer of asphalt can be enough. If the driveway has warped, with dips, bumps or alligator cracking, the cause is underneath. We then remove the old asphalt and rebuild the base. During the free estimate, we look at your driveway and tell you what it needs.

What makes an asphalt driveway last?

Mostly what lies underneath it. A driveway laid on soft ground moves with every winter and ends up cracking. A driveway built on an excavation and a compacted stone base stays straight for much longer.

Do you also pave commercial parking lots?

Yes. National Asphalte paves for businesses and industry, and also does municipal work. The job starts the same way as at home, with excavation and a compacted stone base. On a large parking lot, we give the surface the slope that drains the rainwater away.
