# Asphalt Repair and Resurfacing in Laval | National Asphalte

National Asphalte, an excavation and asphalt paving contractor in Laval, the North Shore and Montreal.

A damaged driveway does not always need to be redone completely.

National Asphalte repairs asphalt that has cracked or sunk, in Laval, on the North Shore and in Montreal. We look for the cause first, so the repair holds. Depending on the state of the crushed stone base, a repair or resurfacing may be enough. If not, we excavate and rebuild the driveway. We do all kinds of repairs, on interlocking pavers and concrete too.

## What makes asphalt fail

Water gets in through a crack and runs down under the asphalt. In winter, that water freezes and pushes the surface up. When it thaws, the base softens and gives way under the weight of the cars that drive over it every day. Winter after winter, a small crack turns into a hole.

Asphalt also sinks over time when the stone base under it is too thin or poorly compacted. Water then collects in the low spot, and the damage spreads around it.

## What we repair in asphalt

- **Cracks.** A fine crack gets sealed, so water stops getting underneath. A crack that widens from one year to the next often shows that the base has moved, and we repair it more deeply.
- **Holes.** We remove the broken asphalt around the pothole and rebuild the base. We then lay hot asphalt and compact it level with the rest of the surface.
- **Sunken areas.** A puddle that keeps coming back to the same spot often shows a base that has given way. We rebuild that base before repaving this part of the driveway.

## How to choose between a repair and a full redo

The choice depends on what the surface shows.

- **A repair.** It is enough when the damage is limited to one spot, like a hole or a dip, and the driveway stays level around it. The stone base holds except in that spot, and we rebuild it only there.
- **Resurfacing.** It works when the surface is worn or greyed, with a few fine cracks. The driveway has to stay level, with no dips or bumps. Under the wear, the stone base still holds.
- **Full excavation.** It is needed when the driveway warps: dips and bumps, or alligator cracking. The stone base has failed, and a new layer would crack in turn. We remove the asphalt and the soft ground, rebuild the stone base, then redo the whole driveway.

During the visit, we also look at how water drains across your property. Then we tell you what your driveway needs.

## Interlocking pavers, concrete and curbs too

- **[Interlocking pavers](/en/interlocking-pavers).** Pavers that lift or sink show a base that has moved. We remove the pavers from that area and rebuild the base. Then we lay them back down, level.
- **[Concrete](/en/concrete).** For a cracked step or a broken slab, we check if a repair will hold or if the broken part needs to be redone.
- **Curbs.** A curb that leans or breaks has often lost its support. We rebuild the base underneath, then the curb, lined up with the rest.

## Common questions

### Can a crack in asphalt wait?

It is best to have it repaired before next winter. A crack lets water in under the asphalt, and every winter makes it a little bigger. If you fix it early, the job is smaller. Send us a photo of the crack with your request for a free estimate.

### What is asphalt resurfacing?

It is a new layer of asphalt laid over the old driveway. It works when the surface is worn but the stone base still holds. Before laying the new layer, we repair the damaged spots. If the base has failed, cracks quickly come back up through the new layer, and it is better to redo the driveway.

### Do you repair commercial parking lots?

Yes. National Asphalte also serves businesses and municipalities, in addition to homes. We repair holes and sunken areas in a parking lot the same way as in a driveway, fixing the cause first. A repair made on a firm base holds up better under everyday traffic.
