# Natural Stone Walls and Steps in Laval | National Asphalte

National Asphalte, an excavation and asphalt paving contractor in Laval, the North Shore and Montreal.

Large stone blocks hold your yard in place and lead you up to the door.

National Asphalte builds your natural stone walls and steps in Laval, on the North Shore and in Montreal. We also build your walkways and landings. Our crew digs and [grades the ground](/en/grading) before setting the blocks. The first row sits on a well-compacted crushed stone base. This base carries the full weight of the wall. The estimate is free.

## A wall that holds back the soil

A stone wall holds back the soil where your yard changes level. The flower bed stays up top, and the driveway keeps its full width below. We bury the first row of blocks so the foot of the wall does not slide. Behind the stones, rain needs a way to drain down. Wet soil is heavy and pushes on the wall, so we leave a path for the water right from the [excavation](/en/excavation).

## An L-shaped wall that leads to the door

On one of our job sites, a wall of large natural stone blocks runs along the driveway, then turns in an L at the corner of the lot. Steps of the same stone climb up to the front door. Behind the wall, a bed of black mulch and ornamental grasses overlooks the driveway. Past the corner, a low wall of stacked flat stones takes over along the lawn.

## A wall cut by steps

At the edge of a driveway, a wall of large natural stone blocks holds back a flower bed. Steps of the same stone cut through it at the corner, and the wall picks up again on the other side, at an angle. Each block keeps its natural shape and colour.

## Stone walkways and landings

A natural stone walkway connects the driveway to the door. Its flat stones rest on a compacted, levelled base, so no one trips. In front of the door, everyone steps onto the landing on the way in. The same stone can follow the whole path, from where you park to the doorstep.

## With your driveway and your curbs

Natural stone goes well with an [interlocking paver](/en/interlocking-pavers) or [asphalt](/en/asphalt-paving) driveway. National Asphalte installs both, as well as the [curbs](/en/curbs). That way, we do the wall and the driveway on the same job.

## Common questions

### Do I need a wall if my yard slopes?

Not always. A gentle slope can be handled with grading. When the soil has to stay in place at the edge of a driveway or a walkway, a stone wall holds it back. National Asphalte does both, the grading and the wall. We look at the slope with you and advise you at no charge.

### Does a stone wall move with frost?

Not much, when it is well built. Frost pushes a wall when water stays trapped in the soil behind it or in the ground below. That is why we leave a path for water behind the blocks and set the first row on a compacted crushed stone base. The weight of the large blocks also helps the wall stay in place.

### What is a front landing?

A front landing is the platform outside the door, the last step before you go in. National Asphalte builds landings in natural stone, along with the steps and the walkway that lead to them. We set them on a solid base, with a slight slope so water runs away from the door.
