### Why do you have to dig before paving a driveway?

Because the top layer of soil is not made to carry a driveway. Topsoil holds water that freezes in winter, and roots rot in it and leave empty pockets. ### How deep do you have to dig for a driveway?

The right depth depends on your soil and on what the driveway will carry. Soil that holds water needs more stone than soil that drains well. A truck parking lot also needs more than a home driveway. ### Why is my driveway sinking in spots?

Because the ground under the driveway has moved. Topsoil left under the driveway or water that can't drain makes the base shift. The repair starts underneath. ### Do I need a permit to cut the trees?

### Can the road be paved later?

### Do you need to remove the old asphalt before repaving?

It depends on the stone base. If it has stayed firm, a new layer of asphalt can be enough. If the driveway has warped, with dips, bumps or alligator cracking, the cause is underneath. ### What makes an asphalt driveway last?

### Do you also pave commercial parking lots?

Yes. National Asphalte paves for businesses and industry, and also does municipal work. The job starts the same way as at home, with excavation and a compacted stone base. ### Why is my concrete cracking?

Concrete cracks when the ground moves underneath it or when it hardens without joints. Water that freezes in poorly drained soil lifts the slab, then lets it drop back when it thaws. A crushed stone base, once compacted, limits this movement. Joints cut in the right place guide the cracks, so the concrete cracks at the joint rather than in the middle of the slab. ### Can cracked concrete be repaired without redoing it all?

Yes, when the crack stays on the surface and the slab has not moved. If the slab has lifted or sunk, the stone base underneath is what needs fixing. ### How much does a concrete slab cost?

### How much does an interlocking paver driveway cost?

The price depends on the size of the driveway, your property and the pavers you choose. A driveway that needs a lot of excavation costs more than one that is already at the right level. ### Why are my pavers sinking?

Pavers sink when their stone base gives way. Soft soil left underneath, or poorly compacted crushed stone, settles little by little under the weight of the cars. To repair it, we lift the pavers in the area that dropped and rebuild the base. The same pavers then go back in place. National Asphalte does all kinds of repairs. ### Interlocking pavers or asphalt, which is best for my driveway?

Both make a good driveway when the stone base is done right. Asphalt covers a large area in one continuous piece, with no joints. Interlocking pavers shape the driveway with colours and patterns, and can be repaired piece by piece. ### How do I know if my French drain is clogged?

The first signs often show up in the basement. Water at the bottom of the walls after a rain, or white stains on the concrete, are signs to take seriously. Call us as soon as you see them. ### Do you have to dig to replace a French drain?

Yes, for a drain laid outside the foundation. It sits at the foot of the wall, under the soil, and you have to dig down to it to replace it. We then fill the trench back in, with a slope that sends water away from the house. ([French drains](https://www.nationalasphalte.com/en/french-drains))

### Where does the water collected by a French drain go?

It follows the slope of the drain to an outlet, often a sump pit or the storm sewer. In a sump pit, a pump sends it outside, away from the house.
